Most defensive firearms courses are built around three things: concealed carry, personal protection, and home defense. They teach you how to protect yourself and your family. SecondWatch is different.

SecondWatch trains for the moment when the threat isn't aimed at you alone. It is built for church safety teams, workplace and school security volunteers, business owners, and individuals who take responsibility for protecting others in public spaces and houses of worship. The focus is team response to active-threat and mass-shooter events: how to recognize the threat, coordinate as a team, engage only when the target is positively identified in a crowded room, and keep people alive until help arrives. In these events, trained help can be many minutes away, and the people already in the room are the response.

Each six-hour session at Double Tap Training Grounds in Calera combines classroom and range work. The day opens with presentations and classwork covering the decisions that happen before and after the trigger is pressed: threat recognition, team roles and communication, use-of-force standards, and the legal realities of responding in a public space. Then the session moves to the range, where members work through the SierraBravo 13 Foundational Skills, including safety, grip, and draw, positive identification, movement, cover, low light, and trauma medicine.

Every session builds on the last. Members progress through four levels (Foundation, Defender, Protector, Guardian) over two years, with each level raising the standard for speed, accuracy, and decision-making under pressure. That structure gives you something a one-time class can't: skills that are refreshed every quarter instead of fading, a team that trains to the same standard and learns to work together, and a clear picture of where each member stands. It also creates a record. When a response is judged after the fact, a documented, recurring training history shows that the person who acted was competent to act.
